Stay in surf shape when your away from the beach!

Author: admin March 5, 2010

I always get a lot of people asking me how to stay or get into surf shape if you are away from the ocean.  Local surfer Ollie “The Real Deal” Richardson recently blogged abou this topic:

“I would start by swimming in the pool 2-3 days per week. Swim laps using only your legs (with kickboard) and only your arms (with float between your legs). Make sure you swim a few laps as hard as you can to where you are so tired you have to stop and rest. The key is to push yourself to exauhstion because that is what you are going to feel like when you are surfing, especially when the waves are bigger. Swim underwater as much as possible while holding your breath so that you can begin to build up your mental confidence for long hold downs when surfing. You want to focus on relaxing and staying calm underwater so you conserve your energy. Also, I would start cross training 2-3 times/week by doing a variety of cardio activities (running, basketball, bike riding, kayaking, rollerblading, hiking, etc)…whatever you like to do the most…the goal is choosing activities that you enjoy and are fun for you. The more fun you are having the less it feels like exercise! If you have a surfboard I would head to the nearest river/lake and do 20-30minute paddle sessions at least twice a week, this would be the most beneficial activity for you to prepare you for your trip to the coast. Stay Stoked, Ollie”
