Keeping Your Child in Wetsuits–On the Cheap!
February 22, 2010
Wetsuits are an important purchase for your child. They keep kids safe and warm when playing in the waves at the windy Oregon Coast in the summer or any other time of the year. Obviously, you can’t expect just to buy one wetsuit over your kid’s childhood. They’ll need a bigger size at least every year. This can be very expensive since kids’ wetsuits, especially top brands like Xcel wetsuits, can cost up to a few hundred dollars. There are some options that will help out monetarily and still provide your child with adequate beachwear.
1. Team up with a friend/relative with a child a year or so older or younger than your own. If they’re interested in keeping wetsuits on their child as well, you can go in together on the cost, then pass the wetsuit down to the younger child after the older has outgrown it.
2. Buy and sell used children’s wetsuits. Surf shops often have used wetsuits on consignment. See what’s available to buy, then make some money back when you sell yours.
3. Determine what type of suit your child needs. Short-sleeved and short-legged spring john style wetsuits are cheaper than full suits with hoods. Try out a minimalist suit on your child and see if it keeps them warm and protected enough for their purposes. If so, you’ll stand to save a lot of money over time.
Get Your Kid a Wetsuit, Not a Swimsuit!
February 6, 2010
There are many reasons why children should don wetsuits at the beach rather than swimsuits. Even in the summer months, you’d be wise to send your kid splashing in a full or spring suit rather than a pair of trunks or a 2-piece.
For one thing, especially if you want to hang out at our Oregon beaches, it’s cold! A wetsuit will keep your child warm whether they’re in or out of the water and will protect from the wind chill. It will also act as a thicker skin and protect from scrapes and scratches. Your child will be able to hang out and play for a lot longer when warm and comfortable.
Wetsuits also protect the skin from sun exposure much better than sunblock lotions, which wear off quickly in the sand and water. An added bonus: getting your child in the practice of pulling a wetsuit on and off will benefit them in the future if they decide to be active in water sports. People who are comfortable getting in and out of a wetsuit are more likely to spend time and enjoy surfing, kayaking, and diving.
Most manufacturers like O’Neill, Quiksilver, and Xcel wetsuits have a wide variety of childrens’ wetsuits. You can also find used kids’ wetsuits at your local surf shop.
Chilly Waters
January 14, 2010
Every summer I take my family on a vacation to some exotic local around the world. This Christmas, our trip brought us to the Kona Coast of the Big Island in Hawaii. While my wife and I had no problem diving right into the pristine waters, my kids were constantly complaining about the cold ocean water.
After our first afternoon at the beach, it was evident that we would have to have to find some solution to this conundrum. We visited a local surf shop and were able to find some small kids wetsuits. The rest of the trip my kids were constantly begging to go to the beach and enjoy the surf, which my wife and I didn’t mind.
